The Story of URFC

University Rugby Football Club was established in 2001 to develop local players from within the Hong Kong University community. While always maintaining this ethos, and enjoying success along the way, URFC has grown as a club, not only seeking to foster young Hong Kong rugby talent but also a high level of social rugby. We currently have two competitive mens teams in the HK Community league – University Wizards (Championship) and URFC (Community League 1).

The club attracts members from Hong Kong and abroad drawing in seasoned social players, players wanting to get back into the game and those who are yet to experience the joys of contact rugby. Fielding teams across multiple divisions of play ensures that our members can compete at their desired level.

Home is Sandy Bay, Hong Kong’s only seaside pitch, where we have weekly training sessions run by our qualified coaching staff and also where we play most of our games. The rugby season runs from September to March every year. Trainings are Tuesday and Thursday nights during the season, and we play touch down at Sandy Bay during the summer as well.

Members are registered with the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, receive playing kit and social shirt, are invited to all our club sponsored social events and enjoy a range of deals from Flaming Frango (Ktown and Soho), Bones and Blades and Double Haven (beers).

Students and under 25s receive membership discounts.

Students

Since its creation in 2001, the URFC has always encouraged HKU students to get involved in rugby. Hong Kong University is the only tertiary rugby team that competes in league play year round, which helps their performance in the various varsity competitions which occur throughout the year, including the varsity 7s and HKRFU varsity 15s championship held every Spring. HKU students are encouraged to come out and try their hand at “passing, running and tackling”.

Student Discounts: Membership fees are discounted for students. (Annual membership costs are less than a night out in Lan Kwai Fong, so you can afford to join us!)

Exchange students coming to Hong Kong University are also invited to spice up their exchange experience. No need to stay in the dormitory alone on a Saturday night. Joining URFC has been described by countless exchange students as “the best decision they ever made.” We have teams for beginners and seasoned players. Don’t miss this opportunity.
